Koper is the main centre of the Community Koper. The city has two official languages, the Slovenian and the Italian language. Koper has the architecturely very rich old city centre. It was developed in the rocky island, which the Romans called it the Insula Capraria (goat’s island). Koper has the powerful economical and cultural blossoming in the years from the 1279 to 1797, when was uder the government of the Venetian republic. The remains of the Venetian period are visible in the city architecture, which has preserved in spite of the modern intervention their medieval appearance. Koper is because of that included in the association of the medieval cities. In this time Koper was the island, surrounded with the walls and connected with the land with the wooden bridge. It was safeguarded by the powerful fortress, Lion’s castle. Round the city were extending the extensive salt works. Koper began to change in the accordance with the economical and social development from the 19th century till the First World War, under the regime of the Napoleon French Empire and Hapsburgs monarchy. Till the year 1912 the salt works are reduced and finally abandoned. Koper started to lose the image of the island and under the Kingdom of Italy it entirely lost it. Time after the Second World War brings the final setting up of the borders, when Koper belongs to the Yugoslavia and experiences the architecture interventions in the centre and in the surroundings. At the city is developed the international cargo harbour Luka Koper. The harbour maintains the maritime connections with all parts of the world.
