Novo mesto is the capital city of Dolenjska Region. The city lies in the curve of the river Krka. The old city kernel is located in the rocky limy peninsula. Between them are three piers. In the middle pier, which is the most expressive, stands the city, the other ones are owergrown with the wood. In the west is Portvald and in the east is Ragov log, which is from the year 1955 connected with the left bank of the river Krka over the wooden footbridge. The highest hill in the peninsula is the Kapitelj hill, which sweeps steep in the southwest to the river of Krka. Here is the most famous rocky Novomesto bank. In this place is also the Zupancic promenade. Breg is one of the most picturesque places of the Novo mesto. In the city was born the famous Slovenian painter Bozidar Jakac, which had the large part of his opus consecrated to the birth city and Dolenjska landscape. Breg is represented with serried residential houses, which were built in the year 1786 in the place of the demolished medieval city walls. The houses are leaning to the remains of the wall, which can still be seen in the basements of the houses. In this place mostly lived the poorest social class. They were occupied with selling of the vegetables, letting the rooms and drying up the meat. Most buildings preserved through the time the typical image with the ground plan and external image with the partial entrenched cellar, wooden corridor in the sunny southern facade above the river Krka and with the entrance from the street. The roofs, which were covered with the boards and wooden shingle from the beginning of the 20th century, were replaced with the bricks.
