Piran is the old port city in Slovenian Istra. The city is bilingual, Italian name is Pirano. It is situated in the cape of Piran peninsula. Piran has kept medieval appearance with narrow streets and closely squeezed houses, which gives it tipical mediterranean character and special charm. At the hill above houses is the church of saint Jurij with high tower and lots of arts of painting inside. The church got today's appearance in the year 1637. Piran was settled already before Roman time. In the years between 1909 and 1953 Piran was connected with Portorož and Lucija with electric railway. Today is Piran administrative and tourist centre, which attracts local and foreigner visitors. The greatest remarkablenesses in Piran are Tartini square, town palace, Loža, Venetian red house, which is the oldest preserved house in Tartini square, Tartini monument, Tartini house, stone columns for flags, court palace, the square of 1 May or old square and old town wall, which is composed of three walls from different parts of periods. In the city centre is situated an aquarium, which was established in the year 1964. After three years it went over management of the secondary naval school in Portoroz. Along the coast is promenade with lots of restaurants which have variety of native food and drink.
