Slovenia is a democratic republic in southern Central Europe. It measures only 20,273 sq km and it has estimated population of 2,000,000 people. Slovenia borders the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, Croatia to the south and east, Italy to the west, Hungary to the northeast and Austria to the north. The capital and the largest city is Ljubljana. The highest mountain is Triglav (2864metres). Official language is Slovene, but in border regions also speak Italian and Hungarian. The main currency is euro. Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia from the end of World War II, but in December 1990, the majority of Slovenian citizens voted for independence, which was declared on 25th June 1991. Now has a stable democratic system. It joined NATO on 29 March 2004 and the European Union on 1 May 2004. Slovenia is also a member of the Eurozone, the Schengen area and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Most fascinating is, that Slovenia is the first post-Communist country which holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first six months of 2008. Although Slovenia is very small, but it has everything what big countries have. It consists of four macroregions. These are the Alpine, the Mediterranean, the Dinaric and the Pannonian landscapes.
