Koper is the oldest town in Slovenia that developed on a rocky island and was called Capris by the Romans. It is also an important port city and the largest city on the Slovenian coast of Istria.
Today is oriented both economically and in tourism. Koper is developing sports, shopping, nautical and swimming tourism. The old town center of Koper is located on a former island, which merged with the mainland by embankment and natural route. A new town center and harbor were built in the inhabited area, and new residential neighborhoods were created on nearby hilly slopes. Since 2003, the University of Primorska has been operating in the city, which has added a special youthful charm to it. During the summer, as well as other months, the city's streets and markets are full of cultural experiences. Koper has many religious, architectural and cultural sites. Architectural landmarks include the Koper Tavern, the Praetorian Palace, Armeria and Foresteria, the 15th-century Lodge, which got its present appearance in the 17th century, Fontico, the Da Ponte Fountain, the largest town fountain, the Muda Gate from 1516, which were formerly the main city gates, Carpaccio House and Casa Veneziana. Koper Tavern is known as a former salt warehouse. Today is the location of the most interesting events. The Servite Monastery is a 14th-century complex with traces of Venetian Gothic and Baroque style. It is one of the valuable examples of Koper architecture.
The frescoed corridor painted with murals is of inestimable artistic value. Servite monastery is a national monument of cultural heritage of the first category. It is owned by the Republic of Slovenia and managed by the Ministry of Culture.
