Ljubljana is an attractive tourist destination and the capital of Slovenia. The bustle of the capital is mitigated by its location between wooded areas, large green spaces close to the city centre and many town parks.
The Breg along the Ljubljanica River is located in the heart of Ljubljana. It was first mentioned in the early 14th century. Until 1849, when Ljubljana got the railway, it was here the main port. Most of the boats and ships, which were laden with bricks, wood and stone, sailed from Vrhnika, then unloaded them on Breg and transported goods from there to the mainland. From Breg to the west were located city walls with a defensive ditch. At the end of the 18th century, the area of Breg was bought by Sigmund Zois, a Carniolan nobleman, patron of the arts and natural scientist. There is a pyramid in his honor next to his house and the road. The Zois palace is adorned with a magnificent stone portal from 1798 and a portrait of Zois. The building was a meeting place of artists, writers and scientists of the Zois area. The adjoining building, which houses the Knight's Inn, was owned by France Preseren's friend Smole. In the direction of Tromostovje was the Blaznik printing house, where Preseren's Poems (1847) were printed, Kranjska Cbelica and other Slovene written works. Between the printing house and the former port office is situated a house that was owned by writer and Ljubljana's mayor, Ivan Tavcar. The portrait medallion on the front is the work of V. Kopac (1987). The renovated area of Breg near Ljubljanica River is a new venue for traditional outdoor fairs.
The market of antiques takes place every Sunday. Designers and artists are selling their works on the art market on Saturdays in the summer time and the main fair is set up for Christmas time.
