The Quarter Community Trnovo represents the narrower unit of the City of Ljubljana. It extends southwest of the famous Ljubljana Castle, along the left bank of the Ljubljanica River. It is connected to the city center by city bus lines.
The traditional districts of Trnovo are Kolezija, Krakovo, Mirje, Kern, Mestni Log, Gmajna, Rakova Jelsa and Sibirija. The internationally renowned architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957) lived in Trnovo, most famous for his plans for the Triple Bridge, the Zale Museum of Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Market. He also designed church chalice. His house houses the permanent Plecnik collection, edited by the Architecture Museum of Ljubljana. Trnovo is also known for its church of Saint John the Baptist, known also as the Church of Trnovo, in front of which the poet France Preseren first met his love Julija Primic. The poet dedicated to his never-realized love the Sonnet wreath.
Along the façade of the Trnovo Church stands a bridge over the Gradascica stream, one of the few in Europe where trees grow. For many years, the church pastor was also the writer Fran Saleski Finzgar, after whom the nearby street where he lived is also called. The house is the work of architect Plecnik. Near the church is the theater France Preseren Cultural Art Society, which is known for the annual Trnfest festival and for the alternative scene. The Trnovo suburb was known for many years for its low-rise buildings and houses that had extensive vegetable gardens. From these gardens they supplied the Ljubljana market. When the city's infrastructure began to move towards Trnovo, the last farms disappeared in the 1970s and were ordered ban on breeding livestock.
Number of farms women, who drive vegetables to the Guide Market with hand carts, is smaller each year. In the early 1980s, high-rise residential buildings were built along Karun and Ziherlova ulica streets, which greatly changed the image of the suburbs. The core of the old settlement was along the Gradascica creek and is still relatively well preserved along Eipprova Street or former Cerkvena Street. This street is also the most picturesque and attracts the most visitors. There is an avenue of old chestnut trees planted here and several catering companies are located.
Before the Second World War, the building of the Sokol gymnasium, later Partizan Trnovo, was also built on Ziherlova Street, and in 2005 it was renamed the House of Ciril Stanic. Ciril Stanic was the architect of the building and a multi-year exercise trainer.
