The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, is known for its many cultural, historical and natural sights, which attract many local and especially foreign visitors. The largest sights are Ljubljana Castle, Triple Bridge, Preseren Square, Dragon Bridge and Town Hall.
The Cyril Methodius Square is marked by many famous buildings, most of them medieval in design. The square marks the beginning of the main medieval city artery, which continues with the Old Square, Town Square and Upper Square. It got its present appearance partly during the Baroque period and partly after the earthquake in 1895. The most prominent place on the Cyril Methodius Square is the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas and the Archbishop's Palace. At the site of the present cathedral there was in the middle 13th century a Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron of boaters and fishermen. Later, it was rebuilt several times. A new baroque church was erected at the beginning of the 18th century. The interior is adorned with illusionist murals with Nicholas story and statues of bishops of Emon. The main door was decorated by bronze reliefs with scenes from Slovenian history, with the images of bishops and the pope above them. The Archbishop's Palace connects the masonry hall with the cathedral above the entrance to the church. The mansion was erected shortly after the diocese was founded at the end of the 15th century. The vaulted arcade yard is considered one of the most beautiful in Ljubljana. Several times, European rulers visited the palace. In the eastern part of Cyril Methodius Square, priestly houses are nestled between the Castle Hill and Market Street. Most of the buildings are two storey and have small courtyards and picturesque gardens on the castle slopes. On these, the most interesting and famous is Codelli's canonical, which was built in the 16th century. On its facade, certain elements from the time when the house was built have been preserved, such as arcades in the courtyard and a corner pier on stone consoles.
Near the City Hall, in the Cyril Methodius Square 21, from the 18th century onwards, there was a city hotel called The Wild Man's, also known as Bidlmon. The house was built in 1742 and is adorned with a stone entrance portal, which is the work of sculptor Ludvik Bombasia and an interesting baroque facade with pilasters.
