Dvorni trg Square is one of the oldest markets in Ljubljana. By the year 1515 represented the edge of the Jewish ghetto. Later it was named Burgplatz and from 1848 it has the present name.
The square was created when the medieval city walls were demolished. At the bottom of the square stood a circular defense tower and the office in front of the city gate's at the entrance to Gosposka Street. In the corner, after the earthquake built house Gosposka 1, was the first Slovene bookstore and on the first floor opened in the year 1898 the National Cafe, which was first in Ljubljana to have a Slovene inscription. It was designed in an Art Nouveau style and decorated with Slovenian ornaments according to the plans of the Slovenian architect, the American emigrant Janez Jagr. It was the most beautiful bookstore in Ljubljana and soon after its founding became the gathering place for Slovenian intelligence. The neighboring palace at Gosposka 3, built in the style of the Viennese Baroque according to the plans of architect Matija Perski, is one of the highlights of Baroque architecture in Ljubljana. It has an interesting oval baroque staircase. At the end of the Dvorni trg Square to Gosposka Street stands a monument to Slovenian war volunteers for liberation, unification and equality of the Yugoslav people 1912-18, which is the work of the famous sculptor Janez Boljka. From Dvorni trg Square we can go towards the Ljubljanica River and return along the Hribarjevo nabrezje Embankment past the Theater Tower and the Gerber staircase with Makalonca port at its foot to the starting point on Preseren Square. Dvorni Trg Square was renovated in 2002. Since then, the place has been distinguished by a series of stairs and platforms with gardens and restaurants. At the same time is an original venue for outdoor events.
Especially during the summer, there are taking place concerts, children's events and dance performances that attract many local and foreign visitors. The square is allowed only for walkers and cyclists.
