Ljubljana - Krekov trg (Krek Square)

Krek Square is located south of Vodnikov trg Square, outside the walled city. It is bounded on the east by an extension of Kopitarjeva Street, on the south by City Hall. It lies under the picturesque castle hill with the famous Ljubljana Castle and the tunnel below the Castle.
The square was built in the first half of the 19th century on the site of a walled trench, which was demolished after the walls were destroyed. The Franciscan or Cloister or Convent doors at the old Franciscan monastery were located along this wall. The door was two stories high and had smaller windows. On the first floor there was a city guard, and on the second wall there were city cannons. In 1816, the municipality leveled the area. At first, they intended to plant trees, but then set up a fairground on the market. In 1919, they made a freezer in the corner of the market, which operated until 1928. Because of the fairs, the market was first called the Fair Market or the Jarmanski Place. Between 1876 and 1918, the square was officially called Emperor Joseph Square, and in 1918 and 1919 it was called King Peter's Square, followed by Krek Square. The area of the square is home to attractions such as Peglezen building, a former hotel on Krek Square 10, the Bank building, City Hall, a fountain and a funicular.
The Hotel Pri avstrijskem dvoru was built in the mid-19th century, on the site of a former military granary. The house was also called Mahr House, and the building master was Matija Dobravec. Peglezen building is located at the corner of Poljanska Road and the current Kopitarjeva ulica Street, where used to be stables and a low, narrow structure. The building is named after its triangular shape that resembles an iron. The largest building on Krek Square is the City Hall, built in 1898 according to plans by architect Cyril Method Koch. Today, the premises of the Ljubljana Theater and the Sentjakob Theater are located here. The well is the lower part of a three-part well that adorned the Auersperg Gardens of the Ursuline Monastery. The above works now stand in Novi trg Square. It was erected on Krek Square around 1965, looking at an old postcard on which square has a similar well. The funicular to the Ljubljana Castle has been located on the square since 2006.
The height difference made by the funicular is 70 meters. The cabin can accommodate up to 33 passengers and the journey takes one minute. There is a public parking lot on Krek Square today.
