Piran is a picturesque port city located on the Cape of the Piran Peninsula near Portoroz. It is an interesting Mediterranean town, full of prints from previous periods and an invaluable monument of successfully designed architecture.
The people of Piran are very proud of their compatriot, violin virtuoso and composer, Giuseppe Tartini, who was born in 1692 in Piran. Piran got its present appearance at the end of the 19th century. Tartini Square was created by the inundation of the Inner Harbor. The city extended southeast toward Bernardin, where they built a shipyard. Today, Piran is the administrative center of the municipality. The city has many cultural institutions and schools. The Maritime Museum has many works of art and history. The Piran Archives is one of the richest in Slovenia, containing a collection of documents from the 12th century onwards. The cultural pulse is revived by numerous galleries with events and various exhibitions. During the summer, various concerts and other cultural events attract foreign and domestic visitors. With its preserved historical monuments and Mediterranean architecture, Piran is a true open-air museum. Cape Madonna is designated as the tip of the Piran Peninsula. There is a walking trail in the area where you can enjoy the magnificent views and sunsets. In this area is the Saint Clement Church, which was mentioned in the 13th century. In 1631 the church was due to terrible plague epidemics renamed the Our Lady of Health Church. The medieval church was baroque in the mid-18th century.
The main church altar was built in 1778 and 1781 and is the work of the stonecutter Albertini. Next to the church is a circular fortress dating from the Middle Ages, with a pseudogothic lighthouse built in the 19th century.
