Ajdovscina lies at the confluence of the streams Hubelj and Lokavscek and below the steep edge of the Trnovo forest. It is a cultural, economic and industrial center of Vipava Valley. The cultural heritage of the town makes rich the Veno Pilon legacy of paintings, which can be seen in the Pilon Galley. The gallery was founded in 1973 when Pilon's son donated his father's works to the town. Veno Pilon was a photographer, graphic artist and a painter who was born in 1896 in Ajdovscina. He studied in Vienna, Prague and Florence. It is one of the most important Slovenian expressionist and new objectivity artists. Veno Pilon belongs to the top of the European art history. In the Pillon Gallery visitors can see the extensive opus of Pilon's paintings and photographs. The gallery also regularly represents works of foreign and local artists and keeps the rich collection of Pilon's friends.
