Smarna gora Hill - Church of Mother of God

Smarna Gora Hill is a popular hiking point, which attracts many people from everywhere, who likes recreation and healthy style of life. People come to the hill through all the year. To Smarna gora Hill you can come from different places. The most known to me is the way from Tacen, where will expect you the free parking place. At the top of the Smarna gora Hill is the Church of Mother of God with walls. Beside church is the restaurant Ledinek, where they have delicious Slovenian food. The first temple (small chapel) was mentioned in the year 1216. It was very well attended already in the 13th century. They built walls in the 15th century because of the Turkish invasions. The present church was built in the years from 1711-12, on the place where was already the Gothic church with seven altars from the year 1432. It was built in baroque style by the best builder in that time, Gregor Macek. The decoration with paintings was made in the next century. Way of the Cross is work of the Viennese painter Jozef Plank. Organs Church of Mother of God got very early. In the belfry, which is reconstructed defensive tower, hang four bells. On the front of the belfry is the bust of the Jakob Aljaz, work of the sculptor France Kralj. Jakob Aljaz was born in Zavrh below Smarna gora Hill. He was famous Slovene composer, mountaineer and Roman Catholic priest. Smarna gora Hill is the branch of the vodiska parish. Holy mass is every Sunday at 11 o'clock.
