Novo mesto is also named the metropolis of Dolenjska, because it lies in the heart of the hilly landscape of Dolenjska. The town was established in the year 1365, when the Austrian Archduke Rudolf IV granted city rights to the city. The old town centre is situated on a promontory in a bend of the Krka River and enraptures with many attractions, such as the Glavni trg square with arcades fronting the ground floors of townhouses, the Town Hall, the Franciscan Church, the Capital Church, the Jakcev dom Gallery, the Dolenjska Regional Museum and the most picturesque row of Na Bregu houses. In the town neighbourhood you can find many possibilites for recreation and walking in Kette promenade, Ragov log and others. The outskirts of Novo mesto offers to visitors many possibilities for short or long trips to Grm Castle, Otocec Castle, Baza 20 (Base 20), Trdinov vrh Mountain or enjoyment and relaxation in Smarjeske Toplice and Dolenjske Toplice.
