Italian Charnel House is located above Kobarid. It was built on Gradic Hill near the Church of Saint Anton. It was opened by Benito Mussolini. The Charnel House was built in the memory to the fallen Italian soldiers in the First World War. There were transmited posthumous remains of 7014 unknown and known soldiers from the surrounding military graveyards. The soldiers fell in the neighbourhood of Tolmin, Kobarid and Rombon. The Italian Charnel House was formed by sculptor Giannino Castiglioni and the architect Giovanni Grappi. The Charnel House has an octagonal shape and is constructed with three concentric circles that narrow as they rise. In two circles you can see niches with surnames and names of soldiers, military ranks and it is written in Italian language Present. In the middle of the third circle is the Church of Saint Anton which was consecrated already in the year 1669. You can walk to Italian Charnel House from the city centre in the winding road, beside which you can see Stations of the Cross. Walking will take you about ten minutes. From Charnel House is a beautiful view to the wide surroundings of the Kobarid. If time allows you, you can go from Charnel House to The Kobarid historical trail, which links places around Kobarid, where important historical, natural and cultural monuments can be seen. You can see the Tonocov Grad Hill, Kozjak Waterfalls, Napoleon bridge and other interesting things.
