The Ljubljana Zoo was established in 1949. It is located in the beautiful natural surroundings of meadows and forests and is part of the protected landscape park Tivoli, Sisenski hrib and Roznik. The peasant's cottage and the hayrack are located in the initial area of the zoo, adjacent to the domestic animals. In the past, cottage was a living place where workers and their families lived and worked on the farm. It is divided into a kitchen, a granary and a lounge, which was also a bedroom. The cottage at the zoo was transferred from the village of Vrh near Kriz close to town Zuzemberk and was built in 1781. Hayrack is a special feature of Slovenian architecture, which is widespread throughout Slovenia, except in the Karst and in the Pannonian Plain. The construction consists of wooden or masonry columns, the laths are of wood, and the roof can be wooden, thatched or brick. It is intended for drying and storing hay as well as field crops such as fodder and cereals. The type of hayrack that is set up at the zoo is called the hayrack on the dog.
