The Ljubljana Zoo is located on the southern slope of Roznik and occupies about 20 ha of land. It lies in the area of natural forest and meadows and is part of the protected landscape park Tivoli, Sisenski hrib and Roznik.
The zoo is about half an hour's walk from Ljubljana's city center. The precursor to the garden was pheasantry or castle manageries - the Auersperg garden with pheasants, rabbits, carnivores and rare poultry. The garden is home to animal species from all continents, and is especially proud of species specific to the area where the Pannonian, Alpine and Mediterranean worlds meet. There are about 500 animals in total. Visitors can see giraffes, Persian leopards, zebras, camelbacks, Siberian tigers, brown bears, Asian elephants, cheetahs, meerkats, wolves, alpine goats, emu, common deer, white stork, guanacos. Typical domestic animals include goats, sheep, pigs, piglets, ducks, donkeys, geese, bulls, cows and heifers. Visitors can see how they eat and how their day goes. A special feature of the zoo is that children, in the context of adventures aimed primarily at families, can afford direct contact with animals. The Zoo constantly organizes a series of guided tours, occasional events and exciting programs. Among other things, it is possible to participate in feeding the animals every day, to meet your favorite animal, to attend a night visit to the zoo on certain days, to become a day care manager and much more.
In front of the entrance to the zoo is a metal statue of a bull, which is the work of the famous sculptor, graphic artist and painter Janez Boljka (1931-2013). It is one of his popular and larger bronze figures in public space. Inside the garden there is an additional batch of different animals.
