In terms of its significance and size, Celje is considered the third most important town in Slovenia. Celje presents the trade, cultural and transport centre of the valley Savinjska dolina and is well known for its trade fairs. The most important attractions are the Celje Castle, the Court of Princes also called Lower Castle, the Minorite Monastery, the Church of St. Mary from the 14th century, the Old County from 1600 and the Church of St. Daniel from 1306 which is the oldest building in the town, etc. Near Celje is located the Celjska koca, which is a popular hiking point and the Smartinsko Lake, which is a tourist, sports and recreation area.
