Krek Square is located in the old part of Ljubljana, opposite the main market. It was built in the first half of the 19th century on the site of a walled ditch, after the city walls were demolished. There is a well on the market, which was erected around 1965.
The lower station of the funicular is located next to the Puppet Theater (Šentjakob Theater). The route runs outside the walls of the medieval city, but right next to it, so with that it does not encroach on the former spatial image of the town.
When the funicular was built, the remains of a medieval defensive wall were excavated, now fortified and displayed along its entire route. The same shows the defensive ditch at the foot of the station, which was later upgraded with houses.
The funicular track is modern and unobtrusively designed, which significantly complements the traditional cultural identity of the famous Ljubljana Castle. The funicular is popular with both foreign and domestic visitors.
It is especially attractive in sunny and clear weather when it offers an unforgettable view of Ljubljana. It is indispensable for its comfortable and fast connection to the old town. The funicular linked Ljubljana Castle with the old town in 2006.
At the 21st Biennial of Industrial Design in 2008, designers Majda Kregar and Miha Kerin from Ambient Design Bureau for the funicular design received a gold medal for the best industrial design achievement.
The funicular runs every ten minutes and has different operating times throughout the year. It is divided into the lower station and the upper station of the funicular railway. They allow organized groups and tenants of premises to prolong the operation of the funicular railway.
