Tolmin is the city, which lies in the pier of the river Tolminka and Soca. It is the largest place in Zgornje Posocje. Tolmin is the administrative, economics and cultural centre of the valley. It got town's rights in the year 1820. Tolmin was between First World War, when were took place battles of Soca Front, very demolished. The town has today interesting old city centre, sporting playgrounds, museum, modern library, shoping centre and athletic stadium. In the old city centre are three squares, which are Mestni trg Square, Trg 1. maja Square and Trg maršala Tita Square. In the Trg 1. maja Square and its surroundings is located the Tourist Information Centre – TIC Tolmin, statue of Ivan Pregelj – writer, inn Pri Kranjcu, Police Station Tolmin, interesting fountain from the year 1862, which was build during mayor Andrej Prezl in year 1862, Fishing Club Tolmin and other. The first tourist association was in Tolmin already at the end of the 19th century. Today are the main activities of the association regulation of the image of the city Tolmin and surroundings, regulation of the historical features from different periods of the history and organization of the performances. In Rutar Street you can see the building where is memorial plate dedicated to Gabriela Mrak – Tolmin's opera singer.
