Velenje is a young city. It got town status in the year 1959. Velenje has two large sports halls, which are Red Hall in the city centre and a little smaller White Hall in the Tourist recreational centre Jezero. In the Red Hall is also the Tourist information centre. By Red Hall is the bus station and the largest parking place. In the nearness are different sport areas as are tennis playgrounds, bowling alley, swimming pool and childrens playground. There is also a walking and cycling path. Also we can see a tank. The main road is called Salek Street. In this part is the most important building Villa Herberstein, which is with its outword form one of the most beautiful buildings in the Salek Valley. It represents a typical middle-class villa from the second half of the 19th century. Today is in the villa an excellent restaurant of first category with rooms, which are furnished in the elegant, secessional style. It is managed by the company Gorenje Gostinstvo. In the Villa Herberstein are meeting Slovenian writers every year in June. From villa is a nice view to the city Velenje. Under the Velenje Castle are ski jumps. In the year 1955 they had on 30 metres high ski jump the opening match on which were taking part participants from Vojnik, Velenje and Sostanj. Next year they built the 45 metres high ski jump. The important abuttal was when they made it possible to train in the summer time. In the year 2000 they enlarge the 75 metres long ski jump to 94 metres. In Velenje we can spent active holidays. We can go to fishing, cycling, riding, water sports and hiking.
