Velenje and its surroundings are known for many cultural and natural sights, which attract many domestic and foreign visitors. Among them, the old town of Velenje, the Velenje lakes with the Velenje beach and the Huda luknja cave stand out the most.
Velenje is the administrative, economic, political and cultural center of the Saleska Valley. The valley is also called the valley of castles. The town developed at the foot of a steep hill on which stands the mighty Velenje Castle. It is one of the best preserved castles in Slovenia. Below the castle are the ski jumps. Attractions include Salek Castle, Ekenstajn Castle, Old Velenje and Villa Bianca. The newer part of the city is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of modernity. On the central Tito Square stands the monument of Josip Broz Tito, which is the largest Tito monument in the world. Interesting buildings also include the Culture House, the Paka Hotel, the Institute for adult education Velenje and the municipal building. In Velenje, due to coal mining, the Saleska lakes were formed, which are Skale Lake, Velenje Lake and Druzmir Lake The lakes were mostly formed after the Second World War. Upon their formation, they flooded fertile areas.
The largest of them is Velenje Lake, along which there are walking paths that attract visitors throughout the year. In summer, Velenje Beach is very popular, located next to the lake boathouse. The area includes a beach with pebbles, showers, toilets and wooden sunbathing stands. It is possible to rent parasols, deck chairs and boats for a variety of experiences on the water. There is a small restaurant by the boathouse, where visitors can refresh themselves with ice cream and drinks. The Velenje Beach is an ideal place for summer lounging, enjoyment and many sports activities. There is also a water park available to all beach visitors, located on the water surface of the lake and containing an inflatable playground. Camping Velenje is also close to the lake. Its offer includes tent camping on the lawn, accommodation in mobile homes and overnight stays in caravans and motorhomes. Huda luknja Cave is located along the Velenje - Slovenj Gradec road.
It is one of the largest natural attractions in the Carinthia-Saleska region. Huda luknja was one of the first Slovenian caves open to tourists. Today, the entrance is accessible to all, only the stalactite bear tunnel is on display accompanied by cavers.
