The old port town of Piran extends at the end of the Piran Peninsula, which gradually narrows between the Bay of Piran and the Strunjan Bay. The peninsula ends with the cape Madonna, and that with the Savrina hills, which rise up to about 90 meters high on the Mostra peninsula.
Piran has many churches. There were even more than twenty in the city at certain times. Not all of them have survived to this day, but their numbers for a small town are very high. Above the old town center is the Saint George's Church, dating from the 12th century. It was built in its present size in the 14th century, and its present appearance got in 1637 after the baroque renovation. The church bell tower was added in 1608 and is a smaller copy of the bell tower of Saint Mark in Venice. The octagonal baptistery was built in 1650 and represents the last building of the cathedral complex. The church got seven marble altars in 1737. Of the preserved works of art, two of St. George's plastics are worth seeing. The larger plastic dates from the 17th century and is the work of an unknown author, while the smaller one is silver plated and is the work of a Piran jewelry workshop. Church wall paintings are the work of the Venice Painting School. Two wonderful large canvases, which are the Miracle of Saint Jurij and Masa in Bolsena, from the beginning of the 17th century, are the work of painter Angelo De Coster. Among the church furnishings are also the church chair organs made by Petar Nakić, a Franciscan from Dalmatia. Within the church the parish museum of Saint George, comprising a lapidarium, a treasury and an archeological cave is also open.
St. George, after whom the church has the name, is the patron saint of the town of Piran.
As a martyr and saint, the Christian prince and knight of Cappadocia became the patron saint of soldiers and gunmen, and was proclaimed the patron saint of many settlements.
