Secovlje is a clustered village that belongs to the Municipality of Piran. It lies on a low hill in the middle of the wide floodplain of the Dragonja and Drnica rivers, east of the Secovlje Salt-pans, whose area is protected as a landscape park.
Nearby is the Portoroz Airport. The former salt works settlement is clustered around Saint Martin's Church in the western part of the village of Secovlje. The sacral object stands on a walled pier and is surrounded by a series of cypresses. The parish church was rebuilt in 1822. The one-nave church has a three-axis main facade, with a bell tower and a tympanum on the back wall. Secovlje is best known for its salt pans, which over the centuries have contributed greatly to the economic development of the area. Former marshy soils formed by the contact of land and sea were transformed into salt fields in the Middle Ages. The town is mentioned in written sources in the Roman period and the saltpans in the 12th century. Salt production was modernized in the 14th century and the salt pans experienced a boom during the Austro-Hungarian period. The saltpans covered an area of 508 hectares. Workers with families lived in salt houses and in one of them is today the Museum of Salt Industry. The salt industry still exists today as a functioning industry in 700 ha of operating salt fields. Above Secovlje stands the Krog hill, where until 1947 it was a Benedictine monastery and a monastery church of St. Onofrio from 1432. Between 1937 and 1970, a coal mine was operated in Secovlje. The Secovlje mine had a depth of about 3600 meters.
South of Secovlje, the main road branches off towards the village of Dragonja, the inland area of Slovenian Istria, and then crosses the Slovenian - Croatian state border (the Dragonja International Border Crossing) in front of the bridge over the Dragonja River.
