City Square in Ptuj is a proper market place. In the 18th century was after the big fire in the year 1744 named by the Saint Florian, the patron before fires. We can see his memorial in the hightest part of the square. On the City Square is the most prominent building the City Hall. The present building is from the year 1906-7. On this place was the house already built in the year 1571 by Dominican monks. In the 18th century was in the property of the Family Poskocil. It got the same ground plan, but is was for a floor lower. In the beginning of the 20th century were made new plans by the architect from Graz. He designed a new building in the style of the German late Gothic. The house at the corner is from the first half of the 18th century. A coffeehouse in it has a long tradition. The ground floor is rustical and in the corner is the niche with the stony plastic statue from the late baroque time. Opposite of the City Hall is the three-storeyed merchant house, which has the Neorenaissance facade. Murko Street is connecting the lower City Square with the higher and oldest Slovenian Square. It is named by the ethnographer and linguist Matija Murko (1861-1952). The most prominent house in the street is the Patrician Palace with the number 1.
