Piran is an attractive seaside town that extends on the Cape of the Piran Peninsula near Portoroz. It is a picturesque Mediterranean village, full of prints from previous periods and an invaluable monument of successfully conceived architecture.
The people of Piran are very proud of their compatriot, violin virtuoso and composer, Giuseppe Tartini, who was born in 1692 in Piran. Piran got its present appearance at the end of the 19th century. Tartini Square was created by the inundation of the Inner Harbor. The city extended southeast toward Bernardin, where they built a shipyard. Today, Piran is the administrative center of the municipality. The city has many cultural institutions and schools. The Maritime Museum boasts a wealth of art and history. The Piran Archives is one of the richest in Slovenia, containing a collection of documents from the 12th century onwards. The cultural pulse is enlivened by numerous galleries with events and various exhibitions. During the summer, various concerts and other cultural events attract foreign and domestic visitors. With its preserved historical monuments and Mediterranean architecture, Piran is a true open-air museum. The Our Lady of Health Church is located on Cape Punta and rests on a lighthouse and a former fort that protected the townspeople from enemies from the sea and the danger of large waves. The lighthouse on the far edge of the cape has always warned ships of dangerous cliffs. The church was mentioned in the 13th century as the church of Saint Clement, and in 1631 was renamed to the Our Lady of Health Church. The medieval church was baroqued in the mid-18th century. The church nave is a rectangular space with cut corners in the floor plan, and in the west is a presbytery.
On the roof of the nave is a Rococo stucco with a main field - an embossed depiction of the Caritas allegory. The main church altar was built in 1778 and 1781 and is the work of the stonemason Albertini.
